Paralyzed author (with ALS) introduces complete series of eye-dictated writings

Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Author Chen Hung, who has an incurable degenerative nerve disease, unveiled on Sunday with first lady Chow Mei-ching on hand a book series compiled from previous works he "wrote" by blinking his eyes.

The bedridden Chen, who was an active photojournalist, educator and photographer before being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the late 1990s, greeted the first lady by eye-typing "Hello, Ms. Chow" at an event to promote a collection of five volumes containing 360 articles compiled from seven books Chen completed between 2001 and 2010.

Also known as Lou Gehring's disease, ALS, or motor neuron disease (MND), leads to symptoms such as muscle weakness and stiffness, and eventually leaves the patient unable to move, but patients' minds are usually unaffected.

The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.

Chen broke the Guinness world record for the most words published using eye-blinking dictation with his fifth novel published in 2007, which contains more than 190,000 Chinese characters.

In total, the complete series of five volumes, scheduled to be officially published on Monday, has 350,000 characters, according to the publisher.

Chen covers a wide variety of topics in his writing, from painting, drama, and photography to medical care in an optimistic and hopeful tone. He also chronicled his decade-long battle against the disease.

The 79-year-old began to "write" books with the help of his wife, blinking his eyes to represent Chinese phonetic symbols. He published his first book that used the technique in 2002.

It took him about five to seven days to complete 1,000 characters, according to the event's host Ma Hsi-ping, who was Chen's student when he taught at a journalism and communications college in Taipei.

The eye-dictation process was both tiring and time-consuming and took a lot of patience, said Chen's wife Liu Hsueh-hui. However, he insisted on "handing in his work on time" and remained productive for years, she said.

Chen is an unusual ALS case because most patients only live for three to five years after the disease attacks, said the writer's doctor Chen Wen-kuei.

Although his health condition does not allow him to write by winking anymore, Chen's words will continue to inspire not only those with illnesses but all readers, the publisher said.

"I've been lying in bed for over a decade. Living in confinement, my 'land' is indeed narrow, which is something I can do nothing about. What I can do is to expand the borders of my mind to balance the 'narrow land,'" Chen wrote in the book.

National Council on Disabilities Kicks off Study on Effective Communication for People with Disabilities Before, During, and After Emergencies

On Friday, June 15, 2012, the National Council on Disability and Georgia Tech Research Corporation entered into a cooperative agreement to conduct a study on effective communication for people with disabilities before, during, and after emergencies. Under this cooperative agreement, Georgia Tech will produce a comprehensive report that explores effective communication for people with diverse disabilities before, during, and after emergencies.

The study will document successful practices as well as identify facilitators and barriers to providing effective emergency-related communication; examine the current state of affairs concerning the accessibility of emergency-related communication; review the enforcement of current disability laws and regulations as they pertain to effective communication before, during, and after emergencies; and collect information on the experiences and perceptions of people with disabilities as it relates to emergency-related communication.

Scientists Demonstrate Mind-Controlled Robot

Researchers at the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne have developed
a system that enables paralyzed patients to control a robot using only their
thoughts. The system features a cap that transmits the electrical signals
emitted by the brain, when a user imagines performing a task, to a computer,
where the signal is almost instantly decoded. However, background noise has
emerged as a major challenge in brain-computer interface research, says
Lausanne's Jose Millan. The researchers solved this problem by programming
the system to work in a way similar to the brain's subconscious. Once a
command such as "walk forward" has been sent, the computer will execute it
until it receives a command to stop or the robot encounters an obstacle. This
allows the user to focus on other things instead of always having to focus on
telling the robot to walk forward. The Lausanne team's research appears to
mark an advance in the field, says University of Washington professor Rajesh
Rao, "especially if the system can be used by the paraplegic person outside
the laboratory."

Paradise Valley teen wins award for developing technology to help people with Lou Gehrig's

PHOENIX — A Paradise Valley teenager has won a national award for his work in developing technology that helps people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Ben Mattinson, 18, who graduated recently from Phoenix Country Day School, won the FIRST Future Innovator Award in May.

Mattinson spent more than a year writing software code that allows immobilized people to write and surf the Internet. He won the award for creating the EyeWriterB 2.1, an improvement over an existing eye-tracking device.

Nearly everything he did was self-taught.

"I was looking it up on the Internet and teaching myself as I went along," said Mattinson, who will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall. "That probably delayed things a bit."

His interest in writing computer code was piqued in eighth grade, when he joined the Phoenix Country Day School's robotics team and started fiddling around with programming the robot. That year, the team beat several high school teams in competition, and that inspired him even more. Ben's father, Rob Mattinson, is the club mentor.

A mechanical engineer, Mattinson said his son's work "is way beyond me."

A parent at the school, who is also a doctor at Barrow Neurological Institute, gave Mattinson the idea of working on the EyeWriter and put him in contact with Dr. Suraj Muley, director of the Neuromuscular Program at Barrow. Muley works with people who have ALS, a debilitating disease that leads to progressive weakness and eventual paralysis of the limbs. It also affects speech, which many patients lose.

Because ALS never affects eye movement, the EyeWriter eye-tracking technology was developed as a way for patients to communicate. But commercial versions of devices that use the technology are very expensive — as much as $20,000.

"My goal was to develop a comparable product at a tenth of the cost," Mattinson said. And he wanted it to do more.

So last summer he spent hours every day writing code and working on a prototype to improve the original EyeWriter software, which is open source, meaning it's free on the Internet. His first result ended up being a camera mounted on a pair of glasses — which he realized would be too bulky and impractical for a person who is immobilized.

After more work and feedback from the Barrow doctors, Mattinson had his current version ready by late winter, when he created the video that he submitted for the FIRST award. The winner is who best solves a complex engineering challenge facing the world today.

Mattinson's device, run off a laptop, is a 21-inch monitor atop a stand, with two small arms on either side on which several small infrared lights are attached, along with a PlayStation 3 camera. The whole setup, including the laptop, cost less than $2,000.

The camera lens tracks the retina, discerning the colored part from the white of the eyeball. The user's eyes control the mouse cursor, a green dot on the screen. The user "drags" the cursor by looking around the screen, and can fix the cursor on an icon to left-click or double-click, like a regular hand-held mouse. He also added a virtual keyboard.

The Barrow doctors gave Mattinson feedback, suggesting he use technology that could "predict" what word a person might type based on the first few letters, similar to the iPhone's auto-correct function. But in Mattinson's EyeWriterB 2.1, several word choices are given and the writer can choose one with his or her eyes.

Next, Mattinson will work on eliminating the lights, which can fatigue the eyes after prolonged use, and simplifying the setup.

He also wants to test the device with patients at Barrow.

As part of the award, Mattinson will meet with a venture-capital company in California, where he will present his invention and learn what it takes to bring it to market.

Steve Gleason is confined to a wheelchair and has trouble speaking. The former defensive back with the New Orleans Saints football team was diagnosed last year with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He’s creating a video journal to share with his newborn son, Rivers, in the future.
“What ALS takes away, technology can give back,” said Gleason’s former Saints teammate Scott Fujita, now a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns. Fujita and Gleason described how technology could help ALS patients in the absence of a cure. For instance, new synthetic voice technology is becoming available and eye-tracking technology is being developed to help replace lost motor skills.

Among all the presentations and panels at the Social Innovation Summit, the one by the Team Gleason Foundation moved attendees the most, with audience members wiping tears from their eyes. Fujita and Gleason were part of a panel on how technology can help in the absence of a cure. The summit, hosted this week at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, featured more than 100 speakers and panelists who spoke to a room of about 750 nonprofit, business and corporate social responsibility executives.

“The objective was to tell a complex story of the ecosystem of social innovation,” said Zeev Klein, general partner at Landmark Ventures and founder and producer of the summit. “We had a phenomenal representation of different leaders, and we curated a largely invitation-only audience that can take a message and turn it into action and results.”

Soon-Hong Choi, United Nations assistant secretary-general and chief information technology officer, announced the formation of the Foundation for a Digital United Nations. The foundation’s goal, according to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, is “to provide advice and resources that will enable the United Nations to harness the power of information and communications technology.” Partners include Intel Corporation, Microsoft, Landmark Ventures and Global Partnerships Forum.
The Gleason Foundation was among this year’s winners of the Chase Community Giving Award, revealed during the summit. Other winners of the $25,000 grants included: Seattle, Wash.-based Worldreader; Team Rubicon in Inglewood, Calif.; Year Up, Man Up Campaign, She’s The First and Keep A Child Alive, all based in New York, N.Y.; Samasource and Room to Read, both of San Francisco, Calif.; Chicago, Ill.-based Moneythink, and Team Gleason in New Orleans, La.

Panels and presentations included the four cornerstones of social innovation are education and empowerment; sustainable leadership; health care; technology and media.

Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen, founder and chair of the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society in Stanford, Calif., described how technology is disrupting philanthropy. “Technology enables us to give in a way that matters more, and has evolved giving from reactive to proactive, sympathetic to strategic, isolated to collaborative,” she said.

A panel, moderated by Schuyler, on how the private sector can use games and social recognition to foster education followed. Panelist Robert J. Torres, senior program officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Wash, described using games and social networking recognition (“badges”) to encourage science and technology education. Among the private sector successes the panelists talked about was the game Foldit, a biochemistry game that gamers used to solve a problem scientists have been working on for more than 15 years.

Fifteen-year-old Bianca Louis of New York City spoke of her experience of working with classmates to manage a $50,000 virtual investment as part of the panel “Empowering Women and Girls.” Chicago eighth-grader Avery Winthrop McCall was inspired to get involved with GirlUp, a project of the Washington, D.C.-based United Nations Foundation, after reading “Half The Sky” by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. “I had to make a change, even if it was microscopic,” said McCall.
Sustainability was the focus of another panel, moderated by Jeffrey Hollender, co-founder of Burlington, Vt.’s Seventh Generation. Sustainability and corporate responsibility executives from three of the world’s largest companies (Jeff Seabright of The Coca-Cola Company, Jim Gowen of Verizon and Michael Jacobson of Intel) spoke about their companies’ environmental policies, challenges in implementing sustainability and why businesses must do more to steward the planet. The panelists said they found it difficult to balance a long-term commitment to the environment with shareholders’ short-term expectations of profit. “Businesses are doing a lot but there’s much more to do,” said Seabright.

Biologist J. Craig Venter, one of the first scientists to sequence the human genome and who sequenced and made public his own genome in 2007, stressed the importance of public-private partnerships. While the private sector moves faster and uses money more efficiently than governments, he said, the government has more of a long-term vision, and both sectors are needed for innovation.

Conferences themselves can play a key role in social innovation, communicating and spreading ideas. New York City-based TED Conferences, LLC began as a closed and expensive conference to talk about technology, entertainment and design, but soon moved to a “philosophy of radical openness,” according to Director June Cohen, putting lectures online for free. In contrast, Bruce Gilroy said he made his conference, F50, ultra-exclusive because “sometimes the most radical innovations require privacy to discuss.”

Fostering collaboration among some of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation’s grantees helped farmers and food banks in western Afghanistan and in the United States maximize their yields and their ability to feed the hungry. Howard W. Buffett, chairman of the foundation named for his father and grandson of billionaire Warren Buffett, said, “We view poverty and hunger as a global tax on human potential.”

Director of the White House’s Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation Jonathan Greenblatt, Chief Digital Officer of Starbucks Coffee Company Adam Brotman and venture capitalist Nick Beim talked about leveraging the skills of veterans and female entrepreneurs to jump-start the American economy. “I think about social innovation, models of human capital and financial capital,” said Greenblatt. “I don’t have those ideas, they’re out there (among the audience members).”

Steve Gleason, Scott Fujita to speak at Social Innovation Summit at UN on Thursday


Former Saints players Steve Gleason and Scott Fujita are scheduled to speak the Social Innovation Summit at the United Nations on Thursday in New York.

More than 200 executives and deep-pocketed philanthropists are expected to attend the two-day private forum, which focuses on building partnerships and identifying potential solutions to the world's largest social challenges.
 
The title of the Gleason-Fujita session is "Awesome Ain't Easy: Technology as a Cure." Former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber will moderate the session, which will identify and discuss ways technology can enhance the lives of people who have been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Veterans Affairs launches iPad pilot program

The department is handing out 1,000 devices to veterans’ families to see how care coordination improves with mobile connectivity.

The Dept. of Veterans Affairs is launching an initiative aimed at studying the benefits of using mobile technology to coordinate care among physicians, veterans and their caregivers.

The VA is launching the “Clinic-in-Hand” pilot program as part of the mobile health initiative. One thousand family caregivers of veterans will be given Apple iPads loaded with apps to help them provide care and communicate with the veterans’ physicians. The caregivers will test the usability and utility of VA-developed mobile apps.

Josephine Schuda, spokeswoman for the VA, said the iPads and their loaded apps are “designed to increase the convenience of health care management and strengthen communication among veterans, family caregivers and clinicians.” The technology will include secure, two-way exchange of health data among all three parties as well as health care management tools to facilitate administrative needs and patient education.

Schuda said subsequent programs will pilot other devices and operating systems.

Apps developed as part of the pilot program, as well as additional apps that are not part of it, will be made available at the VA’s app store for download on any smartphone or tablet.

Apps also will be developed and launched during a phase of the program that will give physicians mobile access to some of the same functions available to them on the VA’s electronic health record system. Schuda said that although non-VA physicians will not be a part of the mobile health program, veterans can share their information with any physician from their mobile devices regardless of affiliation.

The VA awarded a 12-month, $350,000 contract to District Communications Group, a veterans-owned communications consulting firm based in Washington, to carry out the mobile health initiative.
